| ‘This book has been produced at an
opportune time and will provide support to those staff in early years
settings who, from the introduction of the revised Code of Practice, are
expected to identify pupils with special needs. The issues involved are clearly explained, avoiding unnecessary jargon, and looks at the reasons behind the need for identification of concerns. It does not suggest a rigid paper based testing but instead offers advice on how assessment can be practically undertaken through observation of the child in its learning environment. Dr Mortimer has had many years experience of working with very young children and therefore her book is based upon her practical knowledge of successful techniques. Also included are brief descriptors of those who may be involved in the assessment of the child and the need to involve and make central the views of the child and parents.
