Active Listening for Active
Learning is an essential resource for all teachers who
recognise children who are too nervous or inexperienced to ask
questions; those with language difficulties who nod vacantly
when asked if they understand; those who insist they are right
and see only one point of view; those who lack self-help and
questioning strategies and those who cannot distinguish facts
from guessing or opinion.
Active Listening for Active
Learning provides a complete programme for
• observation and assessment
• identification of need
• planning and intervention
• monitoring and maintenance
• integration of additional support and whole class activities
Active Listening for Active Learning will help children
• develop clear two-way communication
• improve their attention and listening skills
• develop and trust their judgement
• view mistakes as part of the learning process
• seek help in an appropriate and timely manner
Developed primarily for 4-12
year-olds by experienced school-based speech and language
therapists Maggie Johnson and Carolyn Player, the principles
apply to all age-groups. Many of the activities can be
introduced in preschool settings, adapted for older students or
used with teenagers with special needs.
